The first bar on Kammenstraat
One espresso machine, a handful of stools and a stubborn belief that Antwerp deserved better than burnt, bitter afterthought coffee. We were right.

More than just coffee.
Caffenation isn't a coffee company that happens to have opinions. It's a set of opinions that happens to sell coffee. Since 2003 we've roasted in Antwerp, bought direct, paid properly and refused to shut up about it. This is the short version of a long obsession.
The short version
In 2003, Antwerp had plenty of places to drink coffee and almost nowhere to drink good coffee. So we opened a tiny bar, bought the best beans we could find, and quietly decided we could roast them better ourselves. Two decades later, that stubbornness has turned into a roastery, three bars and a whole lot of very opinionated packaging.
We are not a lifestyle brand with a coffee problem. We are roasters who care where every lot comes from, who grew it, what it tastes like, and whether the people at the other end of the supply chain got paid fairly for it. The answer to all of that has to be yes, or we don't buy it.
Everything else, the design, the copy, the borderline-unhinged slogans, is just us refusing to be boring while we do the serious part properly.
No founding myth, no venture capital, no pivot to web3. Just coffee, slowly, over twenty-odd years.
One espresso machine, a handful of stools and a stubborn belief that Antwerp deserved better than burnt, bitter afterthought coffee. We were right.
Buying other people's beans stopped making sense. We installed our first roaster, learned on the job, burned a few batches and came out the other side with something worth putting our name on.
First farm visits, first handshakes, first lots bought before the cherries were even picked. We cut out the middlemen and started paying producers directly, and properly.
The slogan stuck because it's basically true. Coffee is the one socially acceptable addiction we're happy to keep supplying, to anyone, anywhere.
Subscriptions arrived so nobody would ever have to wake up to an empty bag again. We roast it, we post it, you brew it. Simple, on repeat.
We started publishing the numbers: what we paid, where it went, what we used and what we wasted. Warts and all, because trust is earned in daylight.
From Antwerp to kitchens across Europe. Same obsession, slightly better equipment, still refusing to take coffee, or ourselves, too seriously.
Direct trade & sourcing
Great coffee isn't found in a spreadsheet, it's found in a relationship. We travel to the farms, taste at origin, and agree on a price before the harvest, not after. No auctions, no anonymous commodity lots, no mystery middlemen taking a cut for doing nothing.
That means we pay above market, commit early, and take the risk with the people who actually grow the stuff. It's slower, it's more expensive, and it produces coffee you can taste the difference in.
The roastery
Every lot is cupped, profiled and roasted by hand in batches small enough to actually taste the difference. We don't chase a house style that flattens everything into the same brown; we roast each coffee to taste like where it came from.
Our roasters log every curve, adjust every batch and taste every single one before it leaves the building. If it isn't right, it doesn't get a bag. That's the whole quality-control policy, and it's not negotiable.
Sustainability & transparency
Sustainability isn't a badge you stitch onto a bag. It's the boring, unglamorous work of using less, wasting less and paying for the difference. So we published the Transparency Report: what we paid for coffee, how much we roasted, what we shipped and what we threw away.
We're not perfect and we don't pretend to be. We are just honest about where we are and where we're heading, because the people drinking our coffee deserve to know what they're funding.
Read the Transparency ReportPulled straight from the books we keep open. No rounding up, no marketing maths.
What we stand for
The values aren't a poster in the office. They're the reasons we say no to cheaper, easier, worse coffee.
Beans
We buy from the people who grow it and pay them properly, before the harvest, in a relationship that lasts longer than one shipping container.
Craft
Small batches, dialled in by hand and tasted before they go out the door. Freshness isn't a feature, it's the entire point.
Planet
Recyclable packaging, smarter shipping and a relentless hunt for the unnecessary. We're not perfect, but we're measuring.
People
From the farm to the bar to the roastery floor, everyone in the chain gets treated like the reason the coffee exists. Because they are.
Attitude
We take coffee seriously so you don't have to. No gatekeeping, no tasting notes that read like a perfume ad. Just genuinely good coffee.
Honesty
Our numbers are public and our roastery door is open. If you want to know how your coffee was made, come ask. We'll probably make you a cup.
“We didn't set out to change the world. We set out to make a properly good cup of coffee. Turns out the second one is a lot easier once you start taking the first one seriously.”Rob Berghmans — Founder, Caffenation
One drug.
One nation.
Enough about us. The best way to understand what we're on about is to drink it. Pick a bag, or let us pick for you.
